One person is dead after a car with six people crashed into a concrete power pole in Christchurch early today.
Two were in a critical condition, one in serious condition and two received minor injuries in the crash that occurred on the intersection of Moorehouse Ave and Manchester St at 1.40am, Inspector Al Stewart said.
Earlier, the black Mitsubishi Lancer was stopped by police doing a routine check on cars on Manchester St.
"As the driver of the police vehicle approached the Mitsubishi Lancer, the driver accelerated the vehicle."
The driver of the Mitsubishi drove off at speed along Manchester Street through the red traffic lights on the intersection of St Asaph and Manchester Street, Mr Stewart said.
Police gave chase and found that the Mitsubishi had crashed into a concrete power pole, he said.
Doubtless the police's actions will be put under the microscope after this tragic waste of young lives. How about we put the scrutiny where it really should be; a youth culture which not only has no respect for the law, but actively encourages rebellion. That's the REAL villain.
And let's hope that the driver is one of the survivors in this case, so that he/she can be made to face the consequences of his/her act of rank stupidity.

Stolen car probably.
There is a simple way to save lives in these situations. When the police say stop - you stop.
I hope no innocent people were killed or injured.
I'm sorry, but I can't find it within myself to care about this individual.
As pdm says, if a nice police man asks you to stop, stop. You stay alive.
Alex; I don't particularly care about this hoon either; I just want to see the book thrown at him. Incidentially, the driver DID survive.
Well in that case it is careless use causing death at least.
6 months minimum loss of licence up to $4k fine and potentialy some time.
Doubt the later if he is a first time offender.
Btw Bakkie Botha will be having a judicial holiday!
Why not manslaughter Alex? Running from the Police, driving through a red light and wiping out at high speed. If you saw the damage to the car on the news, you'd see it was a very high speed accident.
Lock 'im up and throw away the key we reckon.
