It's Irene!

When the New Zealand team marches into the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi early tomorrow morning (NZ time) it will be led by Irene van Dyk.

We reckon that's a fantastic decision by the NZ games chef de mission Dave Currie. Van Dyk has been the face of the Silver Ferns for many years, and was superb when the team beat arch-rivals Australia in Melbourne four years ago to claim the gold medal. She is a fantastic competitor, and having met her in Brisbane a few years ago when Mrs Inventory and I found ourselves staying at the same hotel as the Silver Ferns, she is a warm and engaging individual.

And we'll make a wee confession here; after all the scepticism in the build-up to these games, we're actually quite looking forward to them now that they are almost upon us, especially the netball and the sevens where Gordon Tietjens will be looking for a fourth straight gold medal. We'll clear MySky when we get home this evening. Bring 'em on!

A shame we have to have reasons presented as to why it was not somebody else.

Rather cheapens what is a very special honour.

Indeed David; it is a VERY special honour, and van Dyk's reaction to it suggests that Dave Currie got it dead right.
