As regular readers will be aware, a petrolhead lurks beneath our mild-mannered exterior. Yesterday afternoon, we found ourselves watching the V8 Supercars from Perth, when this happened:
Karl Reindler's car stalled on the startline. Most of the cars starting behind him managed to avoid him, but not Steve Owen. Owen's car had already accelerated to almost 150kmh when he was confronted by the stalled car in front on him.
Both cars were totalled in ther crash and the inferno that followed. Miraculously though, both drivers escaped relatively unscathed. Reindler is in hospital with some burns to his hands and face, but the rigorous safety standards in the cars saved him from far more severe injuries.
Interestingly, the V8 Supercars run on E85 CSR bioethanol, having made the switch to the "green" fuel two seasons ago. It's obviously still a very volatile mix!
Karl Reindler and Steve Owen's pockets will have taken a pounding, and Owen will have some impressive bruises from his safety harness from his sudden stop. Both though survived their fiery experience to race another day.
